FAQ
Thai Massage: Quick Answers
Traditional Thai massage (Nuad Thai) is a 2,500-year-old healing practice combining acupressure, assisted yoga stretching, and rhythmic compression. Unlike oil massage, it's performed fully clothed on a floor mat, and the therapist uses hands, elbows, knees, and feet to work the body's energy lines.
Local shops charge 200-400 baht ($6-12) per hour for traditional Thai massage. Mid-range spas run 500-1,000 baht ($15-30), and luxury hotel spas charge 2,000-5,000+ baht ($60-150). Foot massage is typically cheaper, around 200-300 baht per hour.
Traditional Thai massage uses deep pressure and stretching that can feel intense, especially the first time. Communicate your pressure preference — "bao bao" means gentle/soft in Thai. Oil and aromatherapy massages are gentler alternatives available at most spas.
Thai massage is performed clothed, without oil, using pressure and assisted stretches. Oil massage (including aromatherapy) is closer to Swedish massage — performed on a table with oils, focused on relaxation rather than stretching. Most Thai spas offer both.
Look for shops displaying Ministry of Public Health certification, uniformed therapists, posted price lists, and open storefronts. Established spas in hotels and shopping areas are reliably professional. Our directory lists verified traditional spas by city.
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Common practice is 50-100 baht for a standard session at local shops, or 10% at upscale spas. Hand the tip directly to your therapist.
